Shutting it on and off continuiously also causes way more engine wear in the long run, so running prolongly at idle is your best bet

NOT.

Where did you come up with that theory?

New CVPIs have hour meters to monitor idle time. Ford considers every hour of idle time to be equal to about 30 miles of driving for oil change purposes.

So at 15 MPG, you are burning nearly 2 gallons/hour to go no where. The engine runs hotter at idle, and burns MORE fuel, neither are good for oil life or the engine in general.

Every idle hour on an engine reduces it time-to-overhaul about 25,000 miles based on testing done by both Cummins and Caterpillar.
