turn signal clicker

i'm stumped on this one. on my mom's 2001 grand am se, the clicker for the turn signals, which is the button for the emergency flashers, is clicking randomly. you'll be just driving down the road, no turn signals on, and the clicker will go nuts. i've been driving and it was clicking for about 10 seconds straight, at about 2 or 3 clicks per second. the thing thats odd about it is that its never consistent. it will click for a few seconds quickly, then it might click once or twice here and there. its not predictable at all. so i figured it was the actual device that makes the clicking noise, so my mom went to the dealership today and got a new part. $65 later it still does the same thing. i don't have a wiring diagram so i can't look at whats in the wiring system for the turn signals. is there a relay or 2 for the signals? i noticed theres 4 behind the radio, would by any chance it be one of those thast the problem? has anyone had this problem or could anyone send me a wiring diagram that has the signals?

thanks

Re: turn signal clicker

It's the multi-function switch. The contacts inside get dirty and cause the random clicking. It is a recall issue - if you take it to a dealer, they should be able to fix it for free.

Re: turn signal clicker

I don't believe this is the recall. The recall is for the hazzard switch only, not the multiswitch. Cheapest one I saw new is $90.

Re: turn signal clicker

it is a nice place to check out what recalls were called and how long it took for them to call it. I couldnt believe all the differnt makes and models that had had recalls over the years.
Nice to look up something you might buy in the future, just to see what you'd be getting into.

Hey my GT had the same problem, i took it in to get fixed and it turned out to be the whole turn signal/windshield wiper component, It is all one piece. They replaced the whole component wich runs right around 100$ and i havent had the problem since. Let me know if this works for you.
