Angry 1995 Cutlass Supreme

I am having trouble opening my doors. I have had the inside mechanisms replaced on both sides. One person said the door was to heavy for the hinges and wanted $400. to replace! It seems to really get bad when the weather changes. I can open from the inside but not outside. HELP!!

If the door handles are the pull up variety you problem is in the mechanism itself not the hinges. I had an 88 Cadillac and had the same problem. You will need to get new handles and when you replace them open up the doors from the inside and make sure the connecting hardware is not bent or damaged. Usually the handle bends or wears out and causes this problem. Tell Mr. $400 to pound sand this is a simple fix and shouldn't cost more than $100 if you make the repairs yourself.

I had the same exact problem with the passenger side door on my 1994 ragtop - the mechanism that prevents the door from opening too far was worn out so the door hit the hinge and bent just enough so the door would not open from the outside - adjusted the door and it works fine now. The door is too heavy for these hinges which causes problems like this. I thought it was the outside handle at first but it was unrelated to the problem

Could you tell me how you adjusted your doors? I took it to a body shop and they took a jack and jacked up the door, it lasted about 6 months and it is back to not opening. I would appreciate any insight that you could give me. Hopefully my brother-in-law will be able to help me adjust them.

Re: Re: 1995 Cutlass Supreme

if your problem is caused by the door opening too far like mine was, I gingerly used a piece of wood to bend the door back so it was no longer hitting the hinge (put the wood between the door and hinge and close the door slowly). My door buckled a little bit from hitting the hinge so once i bend out the buckle it worked fine. Just make sure not to open the door too far again!

Re: 1995 Cutlass Supreme

I fixed a broken lock on a car with a simliar door. handle. that is the pull up handle. when you pull it up it pushes a rod down. you may just need to adjust the rod so its a little longer. so when u pull the handle it pushes the rod all the way down.... if the hinges are the problem you may have a problem somewhere. take a close look. look for bends or something that doesnt look normal to you...
