i replaced the maf sensor,, cleared the codes,,, drove 40 miles
light came on this morning before engine got totally warm,., Just as predicted,, this MAF would not fix problem,, it does run better but still unsure on the idle when cold,, ranges from 550 -750 rpm and in gear ,,,trys to fluctuate until totally warm then its OK.. NOW WHAT,, take it to the Dealer at $800 or more!!!!!!!!!! The horror stories I read about on the net are now coming true where nothing can fix the problem.... $150 bucks down the drain.. |

Re: Update, code 174-175 maf! light still on?
What year is the Van?
Are you getting the same codes as before? Why did you suspect the MAF? What else have you tried? |

again cranks more,, good battery the engine starts,, way out of norm for a modern car,, has this got any thing to do with 171 fuel delivery? |

Re: Update, code 174-175 maf! light still on?
DO NOT JUMP THE GUN AND CHANGE YOUR O2 SENSORS!!!!
171/174 are common failures for your year. There is a TSB for the fix. Search this forum under 171/174 or Isolator bolts and you will have a week's worth of reading material.........but it will help you solve your problem. 171/174 indicate lean conditions. (left bank and right bank). A lead condition is the result of unmetered air entering the intake. The PCM cannot compensate for this. On some years (99, 00 and 01 (maybe more) ) there are bolts inside the plenum that have rubber that deteriorate. When the rubber deteriorates the port seals (the ports between the plenum and intake manifold leak). This is where the unmetered air enters. O2 sensors read the lean/rich condition and are often inaccurately blamed for the failure. This is the reason why I originally asked how you came to the conclusion that you had a MAF problem because red flags always go up when I hear about 171 or 174 codes on a 99-01 Windstar. Re: Update, code 174-175 maf! light still on?
A member did the update....and did an excellent job of documenting the process, with pictures.
This link should make the job very easy for you. http://leckemby.net/windstar/windstar01.html ***Personal, unqualified opinion**** If it were my car....I would hold off on the PCM reprogram (reflash), that is part of the Dealer TSB, as the reprogram delays the timing to reduce the "pinging" due to carbon in the cylinders. The result of delaying the timing....might be a reduction in fuel economy. I would only delay the timing if you need it..... |
