Intrepid Transmission Interchangability

Hello

New to this forum and hopefully someone will be able to help!

I have to Intrepids:
1) 1995 with a 3.3L and automatic trans,(trans slips only when warmed up)
2) 1997 with a 3.5L and automatic trans,(engine will start and idle for a few seconds then stall. If you try to rev, she won't take her gas and stalls.)
Both cars are in rather good condition overall and I would like to make 1 of the 2.
I need to know if the good transmission from the 1997 is interchangeable into the 1995 car and connect to the 3.3L and engine compartment.
Where do I find the location of the identification code for the transmission for both cars.

Thanks
Frank

Re: Intrepid Transmission Interchangability

you can usually find the trans i.d. stamped by the shifter boss on the driver's side. As far as interchangability, you can match the transmisssion w/ either the 3.3 or 3.5 and make it work w/ no modifications.

The one out of the 1997 will work.I have done this, put a 1995 trans into a 1997 and worked. The whole exhaust has to come out.I like to find the idiot engineer who thought of mounting the water tube and a steel piece for the wiring harness on the top 2 bellhousing bolts.Keep the tabs bent up on the water tube.

a second gen trans will also work with a first gen, some modifications are required though

I agree, the second generation will fit also. You have have to change the valve body, look at the pins for the nuatral safety switch. They are differant, look if the pins are round or square. You have to drill a hole for one of the top bellhousing bolts, one of the top two bellhousing bolt holes is off and it is the top left one.A modification of one the torque converter bolt holes is one of the modifications too(in the flywheel!).The back cover for the chain has to be changed too.I have done this and transmission worked so far without any problems.
