93 SSEi Traction control mystery

If anyone can explain how the ABS and traction control works that would be great. Here is my situation.

During the warm months my ABS and traction control will shutdown and not work. The lights on the dash will be on. I assumed it was just broke and was living with it. Now, with temps well below freezing (Northeast Ohio), the traction control and ABS have been on and working. Once the car gets warmed up and running after a while, they shutdown. It seems almost like a loss of pressure somewhere. I am not leaking any fluids and am just perplexed by it. If I understood how the ABS and traction control work, I might be able to pinpoint something.

Any advice is appreciated!

Re: 93 SSEi Traction control mystery

This sounds like you have an issue with the abs system possibly a solenoid or pump or as simple as a bad wheel sensor. The traction control system is triggered by the abs, when a wheel loses traction the abs detects the loss of traction and applies the brake to stop the wheel spin and then allow traction to be regained. If the abs is not working properly the traction control light will come on.

There is a service bulletin on this from the dealer. Check for too much length to the wiring harness that plugs into the right side wheel speed sensor jumper harness causing the wire to make contact with the power steering pulley which eventually wears through the harness insulation. Good luck
