Fuel Problems with 2001 Z24 Cavalier

Hey,

I have a 2001 Z24 Cavalier Automatic. The gas tank size is 54 litres. I originally owned 1998 Cavalier 2.2l Automatic and the tank size on it was 58 ltres.

By no means am I a mechanice but my 2001 Z24 Cavalier Automatic seems to be really hard on fuel. In town driving in the summer I get about 440km on a full tank and now being winter I'm getting about 300km on a full tank of gas.

So far this is what I've got changed:

1) Fuel Filter
2) Air Filter
3) Coil Pack (needed to be replaced because one of the wires were arching causing a chug at high speeds)
4) Has all 4 spark plugs changed
5) Injectors cleaned
6) GM ran a diagnostics on my car and everything appeared to be OK suck as sensors (i.e. O2 sensor etc...)

I know that I will eventually have to replace the cluster unit in my car because I can barely make out how kilometers i have on my car.

This may be a dumb question, but can a faulty cluster unit affect my gas mileage?

Also, I don't have anyone else where I live to compare what I getting in kilometers on a full tank of gas for in town driving, so Im not sure if what I'm getting at on a full tank of gas for my 2001 Z24 Cavalier Automatic is normal. My GM dealership said it sounds ok what I'm getting but I still think it's a little hard on gas especially when compoared to my old 1998 Cavalier 2.2 litre Automatic.

As mentioned above does 300km's during winter and 440km's in summer for in town driving sound about right for a 2001 Z24 Cavalier Automatic (54 litre tank)?

Thanks for your help!

Brad

Re: Fuel Problems with 2001 Z24 Cavalier

I would say that's probably about as good as it's going to get. If you were talking highway kms, then it should be more, but stopping and going a lot is what's chewing through the gas. Perhaps better winter tires would help with your winter milage.

Hey Unbe,

I'm not sure when you mean convert to English measurement meaning convert from km's to miles and also litres to gallons. I re-pasted my message and put in miles where it was km's and gallons where it was litres.

Hey,

I have a 2001 Z24 Cavalier Automatic. The gas tank size is 11.8783 gallons. I originally owned 1998 Cavalier 2.2l Automatic and the tank size on it was 12.7582 gallons.

By no means am I a mechanic but my 2001 Z24 Cavalier Automatic seems to be really hard on fuel. In town driving in the summer I get about 273.402 miles on a full tank and now being winter I'm getting about 186.411 miles on a full tank of gas.

So far this is what I've got changed:

1) Fuel Filter
2) Air Filter
3) Coil Pack (needed to be replaced because one of the wires were arching causing a chug at high speeds)
4) Has all 4 spark plugs changed
5) Injectors cleaned
6) GM ran a diagnostics on my car and everything appeared to be OK suck as sensors (i.e. O2 sensor etc...)

I know that I will eventually have to replace the cluster unit in my car because I can barely make out how many kilometers i have on my car.

Thanks Unbe, I hope converting litres to gallons and km's to miles is what you meant by converting to English measurements.

Now that's some accurate conversions. Even Einstein would be impressed.

Re: Fuel Problems with 2001 Z24 Cavalier

Brad,
I have a 2002 Z24, 2.4L, auto trans. I can squeeze about 60 litres into an empty system, and I can get about 560 - 600 kms highway with it. About 500 city. All my problems have been electrical/switch problems (numerous). Overall, not very happy with the "GM Commitment to Excellence". All failures at the 3yr+ point. Coincidence ???
