Change Oil Soon Question

I just have a quick technical question on my 00' GP GT 49k miles, no DIC.

Is the Change Oil Soon (COS) light simply tied to milage or is it tied to the performance of the engine?

I remember reading in the manual that the warning lights illuminates when engine detects that the oil is dirty somehow. I maybe wrong too.

Oil was last changed 1k or so ago and it was clean and full yet light came on. I reset the light just fine. I had some bonehead QuickLube place change the oil for me this last time, so they probably didn't know what they were doing.

Thanks in advance

Re: Change Oil Soon Question

Its based on engine performance (rpms and engine temperature) and the programming within the PCM not mileage.

Re: Change Oil Soon Question

Could extremely cold weather cause a false indication?

Or would this just be the PCM oil life monitor (if one exists - I am talking out of logic here).

It is possible since it looks at engine temperature. The only thing I know for sure is it is unreliable. Mine never comes on after an oil change and proper reset. When oil life monitor on the DIC reads around 20% I have actually accumulated well over 6,000 miles.

Re: Change Oil Soon Question

Yeah, I figure those oil life monitors are unreliable.

I was just curious if weather and oil life monitor indicator was related since it got up to a whopping 7 degrees today and will dip below 0 tonight. I am a college student, so I make frequent trips during the day back and forth across town.

I stole the garage from my little brother so it won't sit outside. We will see if the light reoccurs soon after the reset.
