What transmission will bolt up?

I decided I would make another thread, because it is completely different now from my orginal problem.

I need a new tranny, and I need one quick.
There are pleanty of salvage yards in my area, some that will even pull one for me. So here are some questions..
It's a 1996 LX 4-door with a 1.9 liter automatic.

What year Escorts have the same transmission?
Do any Mazda cars have this transmission? If so, which?
And most of all, how much should I be willing to pay for a used automatic transmission from a salvage yard?

91-96 should all be the same. Mazda 323 is supposed to be the same. Can't swear to it though.

I just called a local salvage yard that pulls the transmission for you, and they told me that it was going to cost me $450 dollars for a transmission, and I have to give them mine. Does that seem a little exensive for a transmission that gets taken out of a junked car?

This place also told me that the only transmission that fits my engine is the 1995 and 1996 escort automatic transmission.

They probably know what they are talking about if that's their business. Most of the $450 is going to be labor and 'shop rate'.

Getting a second opinion wouldn't hurt. Go to the Ford dealer and ask them. PRETEND you want to buy a tranny from them. Don't buy from them though unless you just won the lottery! They could confirm what this guy is saying. Sounds very odd to me that they would change the bolt pattern for one year.

S.Ontario those tranny's are ASKING price $200-300Cdn.Cash at the door does talk though.The MOST expensive wreckers by far! AND also the best and most reliable!! 6months ago (I don't think these guys are on-line yet?) wants 400Cdn for the tranny,400Cdn for labour.800Cdn cash with a new filter out the door.

It's a junk yard. They pull the transmission out for you, then I have to come and pick it up, and get in installed elsewhere.
That's why I thought 450 bucks was a bit rediculious.
Found a few at car-part.com in the $300 dollar range, was hoping not to spend that much, but it's worth it.

Does the entire engine need to be removed to change the transmission on this car?
I wont be doing it, but I was just wondering.

Hey man, Mercury Tracer of teh same year is identical, taht will help out.

This is a major salvage yard conglomerate deal.

Somethin gto consider - most yards will ship parts pretty cheaply, so don't be afraid to pick up teh phoen and call some places that are a lon gway away.
For example, I needed a manual tranny for my '95 1.9 Tracer. Here in NC all yards want $450+ for it. Thats nuts. So I called ap lace in SC, they sold it for $200 + $40 shipping. Much cheaper!
One thing to consider, if oyu can have it shipped to a business, shipping is 1/2 to 1/3 the cost. I had it shipped to the hospital I work at and met them at the dock, put it right in my truck from there.
Good luck. And FYI, trannies on these cars are POSs and die all the time so boneyards know they are hot commodities.

Oh, and no, engine does DOT have to be removed to get it out.
However, they DO have to pull both front axles, that is a royal pain. You can expect the labor to be several hundred bucks.

So, are you guys positive that 91-96 will fit fine, because the person at that auto salvage yard says only 95/96 will bolt up to my car.. I don't want to get a 93 and have it not fit or something like that.

Also, if I look for 95' transmission at car-part.com it gives me these two transmissions:
A.T., 1.9L, model #TJ, ratio 3.55
A.T., 1.9L, model #TX, ratio 4.06

Any ideas which one I need?

Any 91-96 tranny will bolt up...But! You have a 96, thats the first year of OBD2, and all of control electronics are different than the older years. And since the Auto trannys are all electronic controlled, any other year might not be compatible.
