4x4 not working - Is dealer screwing me

Hi,

I have been having a prob with my 98 Jimmy 4x4. It will shift into 4x4 fine (hi and low) and between 4HI and LO just fine. It just doesn't want to shift out. Sometime when it is in 2HI, the switch light will go out too. Then the next time I drive it the 2HI light is on again

I've also been diagnosis Service Engine Soon code P0452 - Fuel tank pressure sensor low input. I put a new sensor on the tank and a new purge selonoid so far.

Well I broke down and took it to the dealer for diagnosis. I told them all the symptons explicitly. They were going to diagnosis it for $81. Well, they call be back in a few hours and tell me it will be $1200 to fix the 4x4 and 225 to even start diagnosis the pressure sensor.

They recommended replacing the Encoder motor, the 4WD modulator, and the dash switch. They said the encoder motor was shorted out.

Is that possible. It shifts fine into 4WD and between 4HI and LO. They told me it likely didn't do that. Huh.

Seems like they just decided to replace everything without diagnosing anything. A good way for the technician and the dealer to make some money.

Should I complain to the service manager?

I declined the repairs.

Re: Have Your Reliable Garage do a service check

make sure they don't give you that "Transfer" switch is broken or
Transducer Motor is burnt out.. If you have a complaint against your
dealership or Truck GMC GM contact LemonLaws.com.
It could be a code out of sync or just a cable ....these days the car dealerships
are out for themselves. Be Informed and Make them repair your truck...
Most of the 4x4 repairs are just minor things...
Good Luck

0452 can mean your gas cap isn't on tight enough

I started with putting a new cap on and cranked it down good so I've that one out too. May be a leak on top of the tank where the fuel pump assembly goes in????

The 4x4 thing is aggrevating. Now I'm thinking about getting one of those aftermarket 4x4posilok kits that allows you to shift the front axle independently of the transfer case. Then I could just let the truck think it's in 4x4, and engage the front axle whenever needed. I'd just be turning the front driveshaft for nothing in 2WD, but oh well.

Any problems with doing what I propose.

Thanks!
