700r4 Needs Help

I have a "stock" rebuilt 700r4 (1,000 miles on rebuild) and stock convertor. What should I do to improve the shift quality and longevity of the trans. Right now it shifts really soft and the convertor pops in and out to easy at high speed. I want control over the TC and firm shifts. Specifically what sift kit would you recommend, and what about servo's, etc.? Obviously, I don't mind dropping the pan, but I do not want to remove the trans from the truck, so all mods must be done in the vehicle. Thanks for any opinions/help------ other than replace the trans with a th400!!!!!!!

Re: 700r4 Needs Help

I put a 700r4 in my 69 truck. I used a kit similar to this one.

It worked well for me. Be careful installing a kit in your trans if you have a warranty... the trans shop may not approve of your "tampering"

Could not get the link to work........ warranty is not an issue; the truck is a secondary vehicle so I have exceeded the time frame of the warranty, but only have a 1000 miles on the trans.

What type of kit did you use and how difficult was it to install ( I switched out the trans myself, so as long as the directions are good, I should be able to handle it. Thanks, this is my first automatic transmission truck.

Transgo Kit

I was about 20 when I did it with about the same mech. know how as you say. I am not going to say the kit is easy... But the one I put in had detailed instructions. If you are careful you should be ok.

Re: 700r4 Needs Help

I think Transgo makes pretty good shift kits in various strengths like street, race, tow, RV, etc. They've been in business at least 40 years!

The trans section of the Jeg's catalog has a couple of replacement valves (one made by TCI, one from B&M) that keep the trans in overdrive until you push the throttle down 70-80% as opposed to the immediate fownshift of the factory set-up. This can keep it from downshifting going up a hill, but might be hard on the powertrain depending on load.

For both of the above issues, if you're not doing the work yourself, consult with your best local truck trans rebuilder for his opinions.
