Quick connect fuel lines to pump?

I have a follow up question, yesterday I dropped my fuel tank to ground level to check fuel pump etc, there is still fuel in it which I am going to drain but my question is:
I have "quick connecters" from my fuel lines to the white plastic tubes that go are on top of fuel pump. I can't figure out how to get them undone. This morning I feel like I went through a rassling matxh with Hulk Hogan and am bruised and sore and frustrated. I spent two hours trying to figure the things out and at dark I was ready just to cut them.
Is there anyone who can shed some insight into getting the damned things off?
PS-I went to Napa and they had some fancy "pliers" but didn't come with directions and I could not get them to work.
