Gas Gauge Quirks.

Is it just me or is it like this for you guys? The gas gauge stays at full for around 60-70 miles, then it goes down real quick until it gets to right about 1/2 tank where it slows way down until about 160 miles, then goes from 1/2 to right above E really fast then stay above E till about 280 or so when it hits E, in which case I fill the tank to find it only take 7 gallons...I've gotten used to this but is it normal?

Yeah that happens to me, and then I drive 50 miles and it drops fast.

Just get used to it. I've driven over a hundred miles with the needle stuck on F and then it slowly moves down but like civickiller said when I get near 240 miles at about 1/2 it moves rather quick, especially upon acceleration, toward the E.

I just replaced my O2 sensor and made damn sure that wire is tight. I have an extended wire that goes from the harness loom to the bung on the header under the car and it was so stubborn. It was tight but the slightest, minisculest bit of play would trip the code. I'm having no more of that. I want better mpg damn it... LOL...

Re: Gas Gauge Quirks.

I've owned 5 4th gens and all mine have done it. i go more by mileage than the gas guage now. My car gets about 300 to a full tank, which is about 33 miles to the gallon.

Re: Gas Gauge Quirks.

yeah I talked with some guys at work and they said about the same, they all do it, even 5th and 6th gens but not as much. I just think it's weird how it can say empty and have 3 gallons left, I just know it gets 40Mpg and wait till I get to around 370 to fill up.

Re: Re: Gas Gauge Quirks.

i also have learned that the gas guage just kinda gives me a rough estimate of what's in the tank, and not an exact amount.

i hit E frequently at less than 270 miles, and i'm paranoid about running out of gas cause i know it's only, what, a 10 gallon tank (89 crx dx). i've never put more than 8.5 gallons in the thing. looks like i always can go about 90 miles further than i think i can.

mainly i go by the tripometer and just fill up when the needle points downward and i'm over 250 miles. just to be safe.

i've calculated my gas milage. it's gone down a bit in 2 years of driving the car constantly. it used to average 37mpg, but now it's more like 34-35... UNLESS... if i'm driving long distances and have to fill up more than once a day, i get astoundingly good gas milage. when i drive to atlanta GA, my first tank is about normal milage, and my subsequent tanks on the trip there and several days later on the trip back get me OVER 40mpg. what on earth is that about?
