1991 New Yorker Questions

I bought a 91 New Yorker Fifth Avenue w/3.3LV6 and 4 speed tranny. I bought it from an auction and when I bought it, it had a check engine light on in it but it seems to drive good and shift good but sometimes it will be going down the road and just drop to 3rd gear and WILL NOT shift out and it will do this until I pull over and park it and turn it off and let it sit there for a little bit. I was wondering if there is a way to run diagnostics without a computer so I can find out what the check engine light is on for. I know how to check diagnostics on my 1990 Buick Century and I was wondering about it since this New Yorker should have an OBD I control system on it.

Any help on this topic or any trouble I might want to look out for, please don't hesitate to post anything!

Re: 1991 New Yorker Questions

you can check the codes by turning the key on/off 3xs ending in the "ON" position. Your check engine light will flash like on GM's when you jump the terminals. If it flashes twice then pauses and flashes another 4xs, that's a code; usually code 24 is for the throttle position sensor being bad. The codes that you will always get is 55 and that is the "END OF CODE" message. You might get 12 and that means that your battery has been disconnected w/in the last 50 start-ups. If your transmission is acting up and not shifting, usually that means it's in limp mode and when it's in that mode, it won't shift out of second gear. Common problems that could affect that, bad input or output speed sensors. Incorrect fluid; your car is supposed to use Mopar ATF+4 and I am 95% sure that whoever last owned it didn't use the right fluid. Change out your fluid to Mopar ATF+4 and you'll see a difference. That's the reason why so many Chrysler front-wheel drive transmissions failed back in the early 90s was b/c of the incorrect fluid being ran in the transmissions.

Thanks for the help. I'll be posting the trouble codes on here if it tells me anything.

All I know about these cars is that these pieces of crap flip over way too easily and when driving down the highway it feels like you're driving a freaking boat. I personally HATE these cars!

Re: 1991 New Yorker Questions

Please Help,

I have a 1991 Chrysler Imperial 3.3 V6

The transmission is acting exactly like the '91 New Yorker trans issues. I've replaced the Low speed sensor, The High Speed sensor and a throttle sensor. Thte car will shift from 1st to 2nd then gets stuck. It was shifting to third but wanted to slamm three times before resuming third. This seams electronic to me.... Any Ideas..

Thanks in advance.
