96 escort 5sp,I can not find the plug to check the gear lube anyone help. 2nd gear is hard shifting and grinds.I may end up taking it out. thanks

Find where your speedometer cable goes into your transmission. There is a bolt with a bolt that holds it onto the tranny. It's 10mm. Take the bolt out and then you should be able to remove the speedo cable along with the attached drive gear. The drive gear sits horizontal. The operating range is for the fluid to be anywhere on that gear. If it is not touching the gear at all then you are low. When fluid is added to the point that the gear will completely submerge when installed then it is full. Does that make sense? Hard to explain. Use Mercon Automatic Transmission Fluid. Probably wouldn't hurt to go ahead and change the fluid.
