'01 Rodeo V6 gas guage acting funny

Parked the car overnight with needle reading just over a quarter tank. Got in the next morning, started up and the orange low fuel light came on and needle was reading E. I did park on a SLIGHT rearward incline, but I always do (it's my driveway) and this has not happened before. I started driving and the needle went back up to just over a quarter tank.
When I filled it up, it only took 8.6 gallons. The tank holds 20. I know that E gives you some reserve (usually a couple of gallons) but I find it hard to believe my tank had 11+ gallons in it and the guage was still reading just over a quarter.
Any ideas, or other users with similar problem?

All too common for the 1998+ rodeo . Try a search for "gas gauge" or "Sending unit".

I am not the original owner. I am the second owner and only have 58,000 on the vehicle. I just took the vehicle in today and the shop stated that it may be covered under warranty they will get back to me.

If I am the subsequent owner is there a standard warranty policy on the 2001 Isuzu Rodeo. I know for previous years I have seen 5yr/60,000 for subsequent owners but nothing in writing on the 2001 Isuzu Rodeo.

I also had a problem with the Transmission leaking which this dealership took care of under warranty about 9 months ago. The explaination was vague when I spoke with them but they stated it happens all the time.

Thank you

The only thing you will find on isuzu.com is this: http://www.isuzu.com/owners_warranty_10120k.html Second owners does default to 5/60 for p-train warranty. You can verify it by calling the 800#. The fuel pump is covered by p-train warranty and the sending unit and fuel pump are considered one part to isuzu. A new sending unit will fix your gas gauge for another ~50Kmi.

Thank you that was the problem I do believe.

Is there anything else I should worry about after I get this Fuel Censor Fixed? Reason is that this vehicle is my Wife and we have a new baby on the way. The last thing I want is for the car to be a unreliable.

Also the New Sensor is only good for 50,000 miles?

it is a 4x4 2001 Rodeo S.

That's *about* how long the sending units are known to last. The contacts wear out on them causing the funky gauge readings. Not a huge deal. Just reset your trip odo & fill up every 250-300 miles should your gauge crap out.

Okay I got a call from the Dealership and he said it was covered under the warranty. Also He stated that because it is just the warranty they are going to replace the fuel pump as well. The Dealership basically gave me no hassle and were great. Thanks so much

You've got a good dealership if they are willing to warranty the gas gauge issue w/ out a run-a-round. Most will put up a huge stink on that one.

Hi Westsacramento,
I'm in Elk Grove, what dealership treated you that nice?
I'll be selling my Rodeo Sport (a must...too many babies)
and I want to get some warranty work done before people
come to the door.
Thanks, johann

Johann,

It was Great Valley Isuzu Madza Jeep. They are on Fulton south of El Camino. The passed two times I went in there they knew exactly want was wrong and already have the warranty information. I spoke with a Jay and he was great.

Hope that helps.

Went to the dealer and told them what the problem would most likely be. Manager said that if it's just the fuel sending unit, it would not be covered under the 10yr/120k warranty. I informed him to double check with Isuzu corporate about that. I also told him to ask them if they recommended to change the entire fuel pump.
He got back to me and said (to my surprise) that Isuzu recommended to change out the entire fuel pump which is covered under the warranty. He had to order it and the next available appointment was after New Year's! They are also a Lincoln-Mercury service center, so they are always busy with those vehicles (lots of Navigators always in the garage when I go, wonder why?)
Anyway, I am just glad they will replace the entire unit for me under the warranty.
