help changing tail lights

My mother-in-law called me to check her car. She said "the lil' teapot light was barely on" it was dimly lit. i didnt see it on when I started it , but the problem I did see was no tail lights or brake lights on the passenger side. i was gonna change them but it was storming close by and trying to rain. How do you get to the bulbs to change them? It is a 91 grandam. i didn't see any place except the 4 screws inside the trunk. any help would be appreciated
thanx don

Re: help changing tail lights

Hey nuwt. Thier should be i think 4 wing-nut type thingamajigs that hold in the light housings.

Should be a realllly easy to get out, might hav to wiggle the light housing to pop it loose from debrie around them on the outside.

Re: help changing tail lights

what if one was to replace the whole tail light .. plastic and all

Would it be similar to the same procedure?
This is just for later reference

Re: help changing tail lights

well Gir, the 91 Grand Am's tail lights are way different than the new GA's tail lights. Same principle though, and I'm pretty sure they both use about the same plastic wing-nut thingamajigs.
They both are easy as hell to change out. Once you remove the wing-nuts the whole TL housing pops out.

Those are some nice Tail Lamps from PFYC. I like the clear. And you do want to be carfull if you get any after market TL, I've read that some arent warrantied because they leak around the outside clear covers. Dont think it was the ones from Pfyc , but they are all pretty much the same no matter where they came from.

I have a 2000 Grand Am SE that had a rear light changeout. All of the rear lights were set in a single plastic housing. My issue was one of the contacts to the back up light had aquired so much corrosion it would not work. I ended up purchasing the entire housing and that was it. So make sure none of your gaskets are bad around that housing as well, could save you time and $$.

Are we talking about the wing nuts on the inside of the trunk?

there was 4 on each side i think on the inside of the trunk. Loosen them and the whole tail light assembly will pull off. Is this correct?
thanx

You can change the taillights by unbolting the entire back piece which is what you will do by taking off the wing nuts. The other way is, when you have the trunk open, on the top ledge you'll see 2 screws on both sides of the trunk, 4 total. If you take out the 2 screws on teh side needing replaced, then slide/pry the taillight out ( away from backup lenses) and the entire unit should come out and the bulbs should be right there. Keep in mind the unit slides out either to the right or left it does not pull forward Good luck.

Thumbs up I would like to say....

THANKS!
The whole tail light, tag and trm peice came out as one. Thanks for the help!!!
It still had the putty stuff on the bulbs, so I broke them trying to get them out. but I did get them changed. Those may have been factory bulbs.
