Question super charger or turbo

I currently own a 96 cobra with pistons and rods. I want more power should I go turbo or supercharger. I was also wodering should I get the heads and intake ported and polished, and if so does anyone know of a company that can do it. I also plan on buying bigger injectors, exhausts system, a new cold air intake, and a clutch and flywheel combo I want to make about 600hp.

im pretty sure on high tq engines a good SC is actually more efficient than a turbo. i forget where i read that though.

Hold on there.....

Never will a SC be more efficient than a turbo, never ever!

If you want that much power, its either going to be a T-trim Vortech pushing out a good 18lbs, or you can go with a T-70 or T-76. Turbos are a little more expensive, and a little harder to install, but you will always get more power out of a turbo...point blank!

Re: super charger or turbo

^^ thats what ive always thought to but recently i remember reading something on how on engines like v8s good superchargers can actually have less parasitic loss than a turbo does from back pressure. i could very easily be wrong though

Re: super charger or turbo

Its just physics, not sure where you read that, but it simply not going to happen, unless you have a complete miss match, but who in there right mind would want to set up an engine with a miss matched turbo?

Re: super charger or turbo

Superchargers are nice, but I tend to favor the turbo myself, especally when ou want a specific amount of power as opposed to "I want to run about 18lbs of boost" because you can run a turbo at less boost to achive the same horse power and therefore save some reliability, also a turbo saves you gas (especally on the highway) and assuming you keep your foot out of it, compaired to a supercharger, because the power lost to backpressure is allot less than the power lost to turning a pump via a belt, true lag is a problem, but i was once told that some people call it lag, and others call it giving your opponent a chance lol but also lag it completely dependant on the turbo you choose, and many other varables but whatever you choose, good luck!

Re: super charger or turbo

Go with a turbo. You should get the heads ported and new cams while you have them out being worked on. I would also look in to a different intake instead of doing work on your stock one if you have the money. The FR500 intake is the best there is for the DOHC cobras however it is $3k+. 4.6 Cobras breathe about as well as a 5 year old with a cold. You should also look in to forged internal while you are doing all of this work since the stock Ford internals are crap.

Re: super charger or turbo

when you replaced your pistons and rods, what did you upgrade them with? are they forged, and what compression ratio are they? when going with FI (as i'm sure you know) you will want to have your compression ratio around 8.5 depeding on the gas you have (we are stuck with 91 where i live) and what internals you have as well

The pistons and rods are forged. I forgot the compression ration but they are under 9.0
I've decided to run a single turbo setup, but I'm not sure of what size to get, will a T-44 turbo be a good size or do I need to get a T-61 or T-64.

Re: super charger or turbo

If your gonna go turbo, go to www.turbomustangs.com and read. You might want to buy a couple of books and read up on how it all works, so you can make an informed decision.

Re: super charger or turbo

I'm Fairly sure that the STock Mass air flow sensor maxes out at about 500 hp, but i could be wrong about that, does anyone know anything about this?
