lookin to buy a ford taurus tomm advice?
hey guys i was looking at a ford taurus today and it seems like a pretty nice little car... its a 98 SE, everything works, rebuilt tranny he says, cold air, 177k miles on it most highway, paint is ok and its for 1800$ he has all the records of everything done to it because he is the second owner and he bought it when it only had 13k miles on it... you guys owning these cars i wanted to hear your take on them, my buddy had one that had 250k miles on it and no problems the whole year and a half he owned it, last i heard the new owner hit 300k and is just now having problems with the motor.
from the reviews on edmunds.com it seems that either the car is a pos or a great car... seems if you dont have any problems over 120k then you got a good one but if you have problems starting at 50k then its a solid headache..... any feedback on what to look for would be great... im going to test drive it one more time tomm and take a buddy with me that can hear better to listen to the motor and whatnot for me.. thanks in advance christopher |

true you either get a good one or a pos. the older SHO v6s were really kickin motors. I havnt seen to many tauruss' beeing worked on, not like other cars of the same size and style and year. Overall I hav heard they are good cars. Try looking at Kelly blue book.com to see what they say the cars worth. But $1800 for a 98' doesnt sound too bad.
I just changed a thermostat in an 05 taurus (defective) yeturday, and its a real nice car , seems to get pretty good gas milage. Not alot of pep, but it'll get you there.

I think $1800. is high for a car with almost two hundred thousand miles on it. With that many miles I'd be thinking $1200. was the absolute limit and that's if it was in perfect shape. Have the car checked out and if it seems ok to the mechanic go ahead, they're good cars basically, but at 177k you're looking at a lot of possibilities.

Any vehicle with 177,000 miles is a risk, at that point the make doesn't matter.

I agree. Edmunds has about $1000 for a third party sale in my zip code. |

the kbb was 2600 for the car, and being my present location isometimes have to pay more for some cars due to the scarcity of cheap cars in east texas mainly due to the hurricane recently. what i really was asking is.. is there a list of common things to watch out for on the taurus, my other car forum (rx7) we have a list of important things to watch out for when buying a 7.... of course this forum doesnt seem to be as specific or have as large of a database for the taurus so thats why i was asking.... the car drives great and looks good for the money, rebuilt tranny that costs 1100 so im sure the guy just wants to get some of that money back.... i bought it today anyway so well see how it goes.
