chirping sound from engine

Hi,
I have a 1999 passat wagon, 1.8 Turbo engine, with around 118,000 miles on it. Recently, upon acceleration, the engine makes a chirping sound until around 3rd or 4th gear, then it goes away and does not come back. It does this everytime I start the car, even if the engine is still warm. Any ideas?
Thanks for your help!

Nope. I got the car with 76,000 miles on it and have no idea if the previous owner ever replaced it before. Do you think it is the timing belt going bad?

sounds more like the tensioner is loosening up, better get it checked out FAST! before you have a 4-5000 repair bill for a new engine.

What does a repair like that cost? (not a dealer, but a regular mechanic)
Thanks for the warning, I will get it in right away!
