Cool 91 Bonneville thick white smoke on startup

My car gives out thick white smoke with a sweetish odor, for about 5 minutes after startup; after that it goes back to normal. Anybody know why? Also, the windshield is cracked; could I replace it myself or should I take to the dealership? Appreciate any advice, thanks!

Re: 91 Bonneville thick white smoke on startup

You either have a leaking manifold gasket or head gasket. It is leaking when the car is cold and getting in to the cylinders that is why you get the thick white smoke that smells sweet on start-up. You really need to get this checked by a mechanic before you ruin the engine.

As for the windshield, don't try to change it yourself, leave the installation to a professional otherwise you could get leaks or break it when you are trying to install it.
