2005/2006 Tacomas: do they make em like they used to?
hi, I've been looking into buying an '05 or '06 Tacoma (I drove an '06 last week and it seemed really nice). I have heard virtually nothing but the highest praise for earlier vintage Tacomas. However, as everyone knows they have significantly changed the mold on the '05's and '06's and I am worried that such major re-design may make the tried-and-true reputation of early vintages obsolete. I'm specifically concerned about the addition of new computers and electronic gadgetry in the newer breed, a problem I have seen in other vehicles.
Here's what I mean: my family has owned a number of Volvo station wagons over the years, beginning in 1986 with a 740 GLE wagon which went like a top for 250,000 miles. We loved it so much that we bought another in 1996 (an 850 wagon), and again, it was another wonderful car that has lasted many, many years with virtually no problems (we still have it today with 180,000 miles and counting).
Then we bought another Volvo in 2001, a V70 XC with a completely new design compared to the 740s and 850s, all kinds of new computer-driven bells and whistles, and it has been nothing but a headache in the 5 years that we've owned it. One problem after another, almost always related to electronics. Everything is automated and overengineered in this car, and it has been nothing like the fine Swiss watch-like Volvos that we had owned previously. It has been a real lemon.
Thus, my worry about the newer Tacomas having the potential for unforseen problems that the older Tacomas never had. I guess we wont know what the real answer to my question is for a number of years yet, but in the meantime, I'm wondering if anyone has experienced any hints or suggestions of their '05's/'06's not being made like they used to be.
Thanks for any thoughts.
