Question engine revs before shifting into next gear

I have a 98 explorer that runs fine, except while taking off. It starts out fine and then the engine revs up between gears. After it shifts into that gear it drives fine. I dropped the pan(fluid looked fine) replaced the filter and even added some lucas. There was no change. Someone told me that there is some sort of relay or solenoid that may be causing this problem. Any advice on this and where to locate it on the vehicle would be most appreciated.

Our 99 xlt explorer has been doing the same thing (fluid also was clean)and after being around the bush and back our auto is being overhauled. Cost somewhere between 1600 and $1800. Apparently the solenoid and relays are internal and the box has to be dropped to replace the parts.

Re: engine revs before shifting into next gear

I've seen one forum entry that said the Throttle Position Sensor was defective....it tells the tranny what rpms the engine is supposedly turning.
It's right on top of the throttle body.

i have the same problem on my 98 xlt 4.0 sohc and i was told by someone time ago that it can be oxygen sensor or somethgn like that, let me know if you find out what is causing this problem. Because it is very annoying and uncomfortable to drive.

An oxygen sensor would usually be a constant problem.

you know, i have noticed that my truck does it pretty much all the time, if i take it easy on acceleration, then its fine, but if i apply some foot to it, it will do it. What can i do to oxygen sensor to fix it, replace it or can i clean it?
thanks
