for everyone who has ever had a rough idle... (ops, this might be new info for you)

Hey all
first off i have a 1993 grand am se automatic
i jsut wnated to let everyone know that if you have a very erratic idle when in park, it may not always be the IAC
if you have an erratic idle, and also the light next to park goes OFF during the idle and back ON during regular running
ive noticed everyone always says its the IAC and nothing else
well for me, everyone told me the same thing, and it wasnt
what it really was, i dont know the name of the part,
but in automatic cars, its the piece directly beneath the shifter, its a white box that has the gears labeled on one side, and houses the light to show which gear your in
even the auto part store i ordered it from told me he never sold one of those before, and to check my IAC (haha)
after replacing, it ran beautifully and have never had the problem again
part cost about 40 bucks from a pontiac dealer

Thanks for sharing the info Justin. Was it by any chance called or contained the "nuetral switch"? That's my only guess as far as what it could have within it that would cause a rough idle.

not sure exactly what it was called
i ahd to take apart the center console to find the part number, and have the pontiac dealer order it for me
i referred to it as "the white box"
and what they thought was the white box was not what the part nbumber i had for them was, they were thinking of something else
i have the box at home, ill have to go check what it was called

What was pluged into the "white box" ? If it had a little gear in it what is the relationship to a nutral safety switch? I thought that the N/S switch was usually a plunger type of set up (I could be wrong) I just can't figure out the "gear". Hell back in 93 that could have been a major emmission control device. [that's a joke son]. I'll see if I can come up with something in the Haynes, when I make my way to the garage to look at the GAGT.

Re: Re: for everyone who has ever had a rough idle... (ops, this might be new info for you)

ok. have a 98 ga, 2.4 L 4cyl. DIS plug system. had a cyl 4 misfire, replaced the plugs, and the coils, and now the misfire is cleared but it has mildly erratic idle and at about 4000-4500 rpms its burps. also at about 70 mph it burps regardless of rpm. any suggestions?

Kidlex01, this thread is almost a year old !

Please dont bring up old threads, if it pertained to a relative problem you were having it might hav been acceptable.
