91' Tercel Warning Lights

91' Toyota Tercel 156k miles

Battery & brake warning lights lit at same time. What does this mean? I looked in the Owners manual, and it states that the Battery sign means to "Stop and Check" and that the Break sign means, "Emergency Break on".

Light turns on, when car is started, and sits in idle, however turns off when you hit High RPMS. Doesn’t matter if Emergency break is pulled or not. Tested Emergency break, and it works perfectly.

Does this mean that I need to replace my Break fluid? Break fluid is kind of dark in color, yellowish brown.

Brakes are in good condition, and Emergency break is in good working order.

Any suggestions?

Re: 91' Tercel Warning Lights

Any time that the charge light and the brake light has come on at the same time in any of our 6 toyotas it has always been the altanator, or the voltage regulator if an external regulator. hope this helps

Re: 91' Tercel Warning Lights

I think that I have the same problem - I have a 90 tercel EZ (with 145K miles) and the brake and charge light have both come on at the same time. By your posts it looks like the alternator. My question is: should I bite the bullet and buy a new alternator or are there parts that YOU KNOW OF that if changed will cure the problem w/o changing the whole aternator? I mean Diodes or brushes or what else?

Thanks.

IT was the alternator - no need to fiddle had my mechanic changit with a rebuilt one. Thanks to All

Re: 91' Tercel Warning Lights

My car had an external voltage regulator, I replace both alternater and voltage regulator this fixed the problem. I think the alternater was $35.00 or so and the regulator $65.00 or so. rebiulding those never worked long for me so I buy complete now. Never had anymore problems, car was totaled awhile back some fool driving with no brakes on his car. Said he had to drive to work to make money to fix brakes, It was a great carbefore that .
