3000 GT questions

I am curently debating on getting a 3000 GT, I looked at the different year models and I don't really see any major difference between the early and late models. other than the 20hp extra juice were there any significant changes to the proformance or the car and if so what year. And what is the max power I could get out of the stock internals?

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.

Re: 3000 GT questions

i love mine. i have a 94 sl...its not hard to drive its the first car i really learned stick on so i beat up the clutch pretty nicely. its getting fixed now though it needs a new clutch and transmission pieces but once its fixed it will be good. its actually really good on gas, but i've heard that other people say its not good for gas mileage. other than the repairs im having done now i havent had a problem with it. and that was only bc it has a lot of miles and is 11 years old.

Re: 3000 GT questions

thers really no horsepower diff between years. the first gens can be upped to the other gens power by removing a small restrictor in a vac line running to the turbos. (free boost mod)

other than that, 93 and over has a few internal upgrades and in 94 i think they changed to she short block. the 99s have improved lash adjusters. Theres other little mechanical differences too, but nothing major. read the FAQ.

correct any wrong info

Re: 3000 GT questions

the base models got bumped down to 160HP after 1996, but pretty much you said it all

Re: 3000 GT questions

also as years went up, the weight of the car drop little by little, like for example 91 sl 3524 lbs and 99 sl is 3263. not much but better then nothing...

you must be talking about the NA cars because the turbo AWD cars had a curb weight of 3700-3800lbs, or at leased that is what I have read.

Re: 3000 GT questions

yup yup, awd is around 3700-800, but what more crazy is the 4000lb spyder, but if you care for weight i pick a 96 stealth tt weighting about 3600lb

ok, as far as actual internals go, the 93+ all have 4 bolt main with forged rods and forged crankshaft, and 25-spline trannnies (although the 93 is a 5-speed and the 94+ are 6-speeds). The 91-92's have 2-bolt mains with forged rods and cast crankshaft, and an 18-spline 5-speed tranny. Some people claim that the 5-speed gearing is superior to the 6-speed gearing, unless your trapping over 120 mph in the 1/4 mile then its vice versa. And as said above, the extra 20 hp is from the restrictive nipple in the boost solenoid that is easily removable in the 1st gens. All the other differences are body and some accessory differences among the years This is all related to the TTs.

As far as N/A's go, all N/A's came with a 2-bolt main block. However, they all share the TT internals for corresponding years. In other words, the 91-92 cars have cast crankshaft and forged rods, and the 93+ cars have forged crankshaft and forged rods. All rods in all cars and models are the same. The trannies correspond to the years as well as far as 18 and 25 spline goes.

And for you newbies, forged are better internals than cast, and a higher spline is better on a tranny.

However, in 97, Mitsu decided to go with SOHC heads on the base models, which dropped the horsepower down to 161 if i remember correctly, which was stated above as well.

Oh, and the TT pistons are different from the N/A pistons as the TT's are 8:1 and the N/A's are 10:1 because the 8:1's are safer to run with the turbos.

I think that about covers all the major mechanical differences.

What is the maxamum power potential of the 3000GT vr4 with just bolt-ons, I am talking about the 94+ with the 4 bolt engines. How much boost can saftly get them to run?? I have seen stock a block 300zx run 1.3bar pushing out 630hp, and they are going to try 1.6 bar. I think the 3000GT can handle more since it has 8 to 1 CR vs the 8.5 to 1 of the 300zx. Has anyone seen a hot stock block buildup on a 3000GT?
