1992 Crown Victoria with a Thrust Bearing
I have a 1992 Crown Victoria with a Thrust Bearing that is gone and will also have to have crankshaft replaced. I need opinions on the following options: all 3 options will need to have the engine lifted
1) Keep current engine (Only 70,000 miles). Replace only Thrust bearing and crankshaft + rear main seal etc. I am also using a quart of oil per 1000 miles. Car is not blowing any smoke. don't know were it going. no leaks 2) Rebuild current engine 3) Install a Remanufactured engine (Full block), if so what is a good engine (Jasper etc) The transmission is gone, no overdrive, but I can get along with out it. Question, if I choose any of the above option, should I have the transmisison re-built at the same time I would appreciate any opinions and suggestion on the 3 options or any other sugegstions How does one change a Thrust bearing ? thanks Last edited by JJ052653; 12-02-2005 at 12:26 PM. |

Re: 1992 Crown Victoria with a Thrust Bearing
Get a USED engine out of a newer car for around $800 plus labor (8-10hrs). A MUCH better idea than replacing any enigne with a "rebuilt" one.
As for the trans, you could have an AOD or the AODE. I suggest you either a) replace it now (buy a used engine/trans combo from a wreck), or save up the $$ for a used one down the road. If OD is bad, the trans WILL fail completely, the only question is when. |

Re: 1992 Crown Victoria with a Thrust Bearing
I've tried Jasper engines in a few of the taxis in my fleet. They are expensive, but I had excellent luck with the 8 or 10 I tried over the years. They are the only reman 4.6's I've had any luck with. On the other hand, I usually replace engines with junkyard motors for way less money and have had no problems yet. Just buy from a reputable scrapyard.
On the tranny, I would strongly recommend replacing it while the motor is out. To rebuild it will probably cost you 1100-1500. You can buy a Ford factory reman unit for about 1500-1600 + labor. You could also check out "Greenleaf." I buy used trannies from them all the time, but your gonna have a hard time finding one to go in a 92 that has low mileage. Good Luck |
