First the car started to act like it wanted to stall when I would slow down pretty fast, as if the gears weren't shifting down fast enough. Now it stalls on its own sometimes. And it revs up on certain gears without the car actually accelerating. I don't know whats wrong but I need some help.
The car is a Hyundai Sonata 1997. Thanks |

I also have a 1997, SE v6 with 178k miles. I had the same experience with the rumbling and near stall (it never actually did stall) when decelerating abruptly. It a few weeks it became difficult to take off at a stoplight as I started having stammering upon acceleration. I had to replace my Air flow meter (combo with the MAF sensor and IAT sensor). It helped the hesitation and the decelerating shudder. If you aren't throwing any codes, it is hard to say. A second guess would be the TPS. Since that part has a direct impact on the gas load and directly relates to throttle it also controls the way your car shifts. Wrong timing and idle will produce irratic shifting including slipping or early engagement, too high or too low RPM. Mine lasted 178k, but RIP as of last week. I did have strange occurances in my gauges but they were directed more to the speedometer. It would fall to zero and spike back up to 70-but not directly with the RPM. I also noticed when they adjusted the throttle too high, I had an awful 2-1 downshift clunk. After installing the TPS, and readjusting the idle, she shifted like she was 3 and no longer 8 and the clunk disappeared! Usually a stammering is too much air in the a/f mixture. I would start with the easy inexpensive parts, air filter, pcv valve, salvage yard air meter (65.00 vs 438.00 new from dealer). If you haven't had the timing belt done, it would be a good thing to do it now. Have your TPS and Air Metering system looked at. Let us know what happens! |

You describe it revving without actually accelerating in certain gears and not wanting to downshift quickly enough, so I doubt that it's a TPS or air/fuel mixture problem. Start with the simple stuff, yea, be sure to check your transmission fluid. Other than that, sounds some type of a transmission sensor/computer problem.
