I wonder why?

Mexico rejects US border fences

Quote:
Mexico says it opposes a US plan to build more fences along the border in order to control illegal immigration.
Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez said his country "does not believe physical barriers are the solution".

President George W Bush announced the construction of more fences in the 3,200km (2,000 miles) border while touring US states earlier this week.

About 10 million Mexicans live in the United States and more than four million are said to stay illegally.

More than a million are arrested every year as they try to enter the US to look for work.

Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez

Experts said the migration trend would continue because of the huge wage gap between the US and Mexico.

Mr Derbez insisted his country's position over physical barriers was not only in relation to the United States.

"Mexico voted against the fence Israel built in the Gaza Strip, and against the fences Spain built in Melilla and elsewhere," he said.

The US has already built a border wall between San Diego and Tijuana.

'Adapt'

President Bush toured US states to rally support for his strategy to control immigration. He wants tighter security along the Mexican frontier.

He said his government planned to erect wire fences in the urban areas where there was no physical division between the two countries.

Mr Bush added that in the rural areas, barriers preventing the free flow of vehicles from Mexico into the US were to go up.

He promised the use of unmanned flying drones to help patrol the porous US-Mexican frontier.

"Border security must adapt to the nation's changing needs," Mr Bush said.

He also plans to allow migrants with a job offer to stay in the US temporarily.

Some of his own supporters resist the so-called guest-worker plan. Under his proposal, undocumented aliens would be allowed to get three-year work visas.

They could extend them for an additional three years, under the condition that they would return to their home countries for a year to apply for a new work permit.

But some Republicans say Mr Bush's ideas would reward illegal immigration. Others think the border would still not be secure enough to keep out terrorists and drug-traffickers.

I like the guest-worker program thing that Bush is trying to get going because it would get immigrants what they want, and since many of them just send the money home basicly, it would be really benefitting for them all. I dont agree with the electric fences though because it sounds like a big waste of money IMO.

Re: I wonder why?

"I wonder why..."

...because illegally-earned money sent back to Mexico constitutes a LARGE portion of that country's economy.

Talk about a fucking mooch.

^ That statement is NOT directed towards Mexicans as a people. I know that a lot of the immigrants are hard-working and conscientious. It is referring to the corrupt Mexican government that can't think of a better plan than to mooch off the USA's economy, and are actually ENCOURAGING its people to break America's immigration laws.

Re: I wonder why?

They need to just build the fence already. I cant really agree to the visa program as I would prefer to have our money stay in country rather than go to mexico where its likely to just go to their corrupt government.

Re: I wonder why?

No matter what kind of barrier you put up along the border, people will still find a way to cross it. The only difference is that it will be more difficult and expensive for them to get home, so they'll have to stay.

Checkout this story. It is no BS. This guy came all the way from Iran via Mexico raising the issue of whether our borders are secure from terrorists or anyone for that matter.

Probably because NAFTA is the problem. A fence won't fix nafta. Maybe if the U.S. would allow Mexican companies to pay their employees more money they wouldn't come to the U.S. to try and make up for it?

But why would anybody in the government use common sense when they can waste their money on useless construction projects?

Re: I wonder why?

So what if Mexico rejects it. We just need to build the wall like 10 feet in on our side of the border.

I think this is one of the first issues I have ever agreed with George on

Re: Re: I wonder why?

Even if Mexico rejects the border fence the House has voted in favor of the bill presented and it is on its way to the Senate. It calls for 700 miles of fence, more Border Patrol agents, and high tech surveillance equipment at a cost of $2.2 billion. Plus illegal immigration will be a felony.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/natio...5650-9667r.htm

In a public relations ploy and to preserve his legacy (that's a joke), the Mexican President Vicente Fox has hired a PR firm. The bottom line is Mexico needs to butt out of American policy and worry about their own problems.

In the mean time however, the U.S. should continue to control Mexico's policies. Part of Mexico's economic problems are caused by U.S. control of much of their industry. I think people fail to see that the solution to this problem does not rest soley in one country, it needs to be addressed by both countries if we want to see any progress happen. A fence is just a band aid, not an actual solution to the problem.

What a concept...deal with the underlying issue...don't expect such a novel approach from this administration.
