Fuel Pump vs. Wire Harness?

Our 2001 Kia Sportage that we bought used at 52,000 miles recently broke down. We had it towed 95 miles to our home and then pushed to the mechanic I've been going to for years and trust. He explained to me that the fuel pump was not creating any pressure and no fuel was getting to the engine. This seemed right based on how the car broke down and then would start back up ok but then die out almost immediately. My mechanic suggested I tow the car to a dealership since its still under factory warrantee and would be free to replace the fuel pump as opposed to $770 if the mechanic were to do it.

When we towed the car to a dealership they diagnosed the problem as the wire harness. This seems very odd since the wire harness was just replaced less than six weeks ago. Is there more than one wires harness on the 2001 Kia Sportage? And is there anyway I can make sure that the dealership replaced the fuel pump before leaving the property? I've heard two stories from them, one that the problem was not the fuel pump and one saying that they already replaced it. This is my wife's car she drives our infant daughter to day care in, and I'd hate to have it break down again because the dealership wanted to save a few bucks.

I have seen wiring harness issues on pre 2000 kias but not so much on the 2001.

If you flip the back seat up there is a carpet cover that can be peeled back and 4 screws holding the access cover to the fuel pump. You can remove them to see if the pump is new.
