95 Grand Am engine noise/shake

Hi, my grand am is in a little bit of a rough shape. I recently rear-ended a guy on the interstate, but not very hard. Just barely enough to bend the hood up an inch or so and break the plastic grill thing. Anyway, the engine makes a whine sound when it runs. As the rpms go up, so does the pitch.

Also, the engine shakes from time to time. The day of the accident (before and after) it started running very rough. It was easily noticed when the car was parked and idling as it would sound kind of chuggy and would shake the car. Driving down the road it would shake so fast that it was hardly noticable, until it got to around 50-65 mph when it'd shake very violently. The violent shaking would ease once I let off the gas, and I'd be able to continue on at the same speed, just letting off the gas every time it'd shake.

It stopped doing the shaking for a while, leaving only the whine. Now it has started the shaking at idle again. I haven't gone fast enough to see if it does the violent shaking yet, since I've only been driving around town. Any input would be appreciated. thanks!

Welcome to the forum. My guess would be that you damaged / shocked one of your engine mounts. That is the most probable cause of the shaking. As far as the whine, I'm not sure if that would be engine mount-related; but other guys that know more should chime in soon. My guess is that replacing the mount(s) would solve both problems; but like I siad, I'm not sure.

Yea, that's kinda what I thought too. Though the thing that stumps me is why it stopped, then started back up again. I think it's more operation-related because of the way it was bogging down earlier that day, prior to the accident. Also, the next day it was completely fine. Now today, more than a week later, it starts the shaking again. I considered maybe alignment or even tire balance, but it only shakes when gas is applied. I can coast 60+ mph downhill and be smooth, even if I'm accelerating. It's only when it's cruising at those speeds that it shakes.

Sorry, I probably should have thrown those details in the first post, but I was in a bit of a rush. BTW, TY for the welcome and the input.

First Things First, Eliminate The Obvious By Checking All Your Electrical Connections Especially Those By The Pcm. Unplug And Replug If Necessary. Then Check The Plastic Pulley For Your Power Steering Make Sure It's Not Cracked Or Rubbing On Anyting.(whinning Noise). Next Check To See That The Passenger Side Motor Mount Hasn't Broke A Bolt There Are 3 On A 3.1. Under Impact Or High Tourqe These Will Break. Good Luck Hope This Helps.
