2500HD Tranny is no longer working

Hi guys,

I just got back from a friends shop where we tried to change the fluid and filter on my 2002 2500HD Silverado with a 6.0 L engine. I just rolled over 100,000 miles on the truck and have never had any issues with the engine or the tranny. I had my buddy change the tranny, transfer case and diff fluids at 50,000 miles as well. Today, we also did the plugs, brakes, fuel filter, coolant system, etc.

When we filled up the tranny, and went to start the truck, it was running weird. Dropping down to either 200 RPM's or just stalling completely. After a couple restarts, that cleared out, and we figured it was just something with the fuel line. Maybe air from changing the filter. But, then, as it was running on it's own, the engine suddenly stalled. Not like it shut off, but like something stopped it. We didn't hear any metal on metal or grinding to a halt though.

We started it back up, and I noticed a strange knock coming from the back of the motor/tranny. We then tried to put it in gear, and found that it wouldn't move. Forward, reverse, and I tried 4WD and nothing was working.

We then drained the pan, and checked to make sure the filter and pick up was still in place, and everything was. But we noticed there were some fine metal filings in the fluid. It was very fine particles. Not shavings or pieces. We put the pan back up, filled the pan again with fresh fluid, and then tried to power flush the system from the tranny cooler lines. The flush machine showed that there was no pressure in the system.

We're lost, and my buddy feels terrible. I brought in a truck that I've never had a problem with and now after trying to take care of it, it's broken. We were thinking either the pump or the torque converter might be shot. And after looking through some of the threads here, it looks like we might have to check some valve celenoids? Does anyone have any other ideas what it could be?

Thanks for any help,

Chris

SOUNDS LIKE MAYBE THE PUMP OR CONVERTER TOOK A CRAP.
The metal is a concern.

Sometimes fresh fluid kills a transmission. I'm sure your buddy didn't do anything imporperly. Afraid I don't know much more about transmissions than you do, though =).

Re: 2500HD Tranny is no longer working

Hi guys,

Well, we installed the new transmission last night and she's running like a top. But I'm having an issue with the shift indicator moving over to the drive position. When I move the shifter lever, the lever itself goes from P, to R, N and into D, 3, 2 and 1. But what happens is the indicator only goes as far as N and then moves over to D after about 10 seconds. I drove it, and she goes through all the gears fine when the lever is in the D position, but it just takes a while for the selector light to move over. We tried playing with the module on the side of the tranny, but that didn't fix it. Does anyone have any other ideas what it could be or how to fix it?

Thanks,

Chris
