I have just joined the club of people with blown engines
Worst part is I knew of the oil consumption problem w/ these troopers & stay on top of it. Actually just purchased the truck about 4k miles ago. I want to keep the truck-99 trooper w/112k- so the next delima is choosing between a used motor or a new one. Do the new-brand new $5k ones- still have the oil consumption problem? Will a 01' model motor fit easily, I think I have read on here that they don't have the same problems. Any comments appreciated.

Did it run low on oil? I personally dont think isuzu ever really solved the oil consumption issue with the 3.2/3.5L. My sister-in-laws 2003 rodeo 3.2L used oil (she just sold it), as does my cousins 2002 trooper. Then on the other hand, my 2002 uses little to no oil between 3-5K mile oil changes! Keep in mind you can use any 1998+ 3.2 or 3.5 in your trooper. Just plug your current electronics onto the donor engine. That's a tough call dumping ~$6K into a 1999 trooper with a NEW engine, as the truck is barely worth that. I'd try to find a good used engine and cap the expense at around $3K if you want to keep'er.
G/luck Joel

I had the short block changed on my 99 Trooper in May 2005. I now have 10,000 miles on the new motor with little oil consumption. I'm ready for my third oil change and the oil level on the dip stick is 1/4" down from full. This is a lot better than the first time around when the truck was new. The 2001 motor is slightly different from the 1999. There was a 2001 getting a new short block just after mine was done. He had the same problem with oil consumption, and surprise surprise, he had the same problem of mismatched pistons and rings when they took it apart to figure out the consumption problem. My advice is if the rest of the truck is in good shape, fix it right the first time. It's always more to do things twice. Patrick |

[" No difference in the block, internals and heads."
Joel[/quote] The 2001 short block has a different part # than the 99. The dealer told me that they were not interchangeable. As it was, I was having problems with two codes after my motor replacement. They were related to the EVAP system. The dealer couldn't figure it out, but it resolved itself over time. They figured that the computer had new variables/readings that caused the system to think that the readings were out of "range". That said, I don't think I would risk the experiment of interchanging blocks. Patrick |
