Whining Sound when turning

For the past two days I notice whenever I take turns and give it gas theres a whine under the hood. But when I straighten the car out to go forward it stops. I also notice when Im stopped at an intersection and turn the steering wheel a little bit u can hear the power steering pump get louder? Whats going on?

Re: Whining Sound when turning

same thing happened to mine, you might have a power steering fluid leak, or may just have to re-fill it. i ended up having a leak in mine and had it replaced.

How do I refill it? It looks hard to get down there? How much is a new power steering pump?

Re: Whining Sound when turning

yeah it is kinda hard to get all the way down there, make sure you wipe and check the dip-stick attached to the lid to see the level of the fluid if any. you can use a funnel with a really long spout, but if you just have a regular funnel what you can do also is get some tubing and attach it to the end of the short funnel and put the other end where the steering fluid goes, thats what i did. when i got my pump replaced it costed around 200 i belive, could be a little more though because i knew the mechanic who did the job for me. i would just refill it first and if the noise stops then starts again within a few hours (or days) then i would say the pump is going bad or might have a leak.

My GTP only has 108,000 miles on it. is that a common thing that the pump would go out that early?

Re: Whining Sound when turning

Of the 4 GM/Ford cars I owned or driven, 3 with 8-12 years or under 130,000 miles and no problem with the PS system; my 96 Cavalier is the only exception that I had to replace the PS pump when it started a slow leak after 160,000 miles/9-years.

Replacing the pump is very easy & inexpensive. The pump for my Cavalier was like $30-40 although it did took me a couple of hours to figure out transferring the pulley & reservior tank from the old pump...

On my 01 GT, I would unbolt the coolant tank and move it out of the way. I get plenty of room with the coolant tank out...

Read my prior post, PS pump is very cheap. If I have to guess for our GP, it is $50 or less. If you can undo the serpentine belt, you can change the PS pump. You can rent pump-pulley puller/belt tool at Autozone and another $5 for 2 bottles of new PS fuild. Pick a nice saturday weekend and a good friend to help you with.

Re: Whining Sound when turning

Mine is a 97.5 Regal GS 3.8 S/C motor....PS pump is under the alternator......Mine started whining and checked the fluid and it was low....I topped off the fluid and it leaked out slowly again........i bought a bottle of LUCAS PS fluid additive...On the bottle it says it stops all leaks and stops whining...i was skepticle, but it really works...Its been 2 months and still is full and has no whine....You should try it before you replace the pump....It costs about $8.00...It may not be a permenant fix but could last several months.

Re: Whining Sound when turning

I have a similar problem. I have a 2004 Pontiac grand prix. I get the whining sound when turning but it also continues as I go straight when I accelerate. That lasts for a couple of minutes. It is especially loud in the morning, however occasionally it will do it just as loud during the day. I checked the power steering fluid and it seems full so I don't think anything is leaking.... Any ideas? Please post a response or email me at [email protected]

We would prefer that you do not resurrect posts this old. I would recommend starting a new thread/post.
