Hi.
I have a 2001 Grand AM GT. The Service Engine light came on. My brother got the code. It EGR related - 1404. I can't remember exactly, but something about it stuck open or closed? Anyways, he tried to clean it, but that was posing a problem. We bought a new one and replaced it. 10 miles down the road the light came on again!! We are going to check the code again tonight, but don't foresee it being a different code. Any thoughts on what could be wrong??? Thanks! Jen |

Re: Service Engine Light - new EGR valve didn't fix it
What size engine do you have and do you have the exact code that you pulled from the computer? It is possible that the egr passageway is blocked and needs to be cleaned to allow it to work properly.

If it's not that, then my guess would be that it's the plug / harness hooked up to it. I've heard of them going bad before. It may require a new plug / wires being spliced in. But like GTP Dad said, having the whole code description will help.

Re: Service Engine Light - new EGR valve didn't fix it
Hmm. . . my brother does all my work. I remember him saying something about the code saying 'EGR valve is open (or closed I can't remember) when ECM. . . .' that's all I can remember. Sorry. I have a 3.1 V6. I was going to pass all these comments onto my brother and if he can't do anything then go to the dealer I guess. I'm trying to do this as cheap as possible . . .
