hot rod emissions pass,,dellorto

ok.moror heads.. I love cars too..The bug taps my soal like a harley,, Help me out..Dual Dellorto carbs, rebuilt 1750cc engine, smells really rich...When someone's behind me, (as it usually happens)they say black smoke just pours from my exhaust,,,,hense burning rich ...I just bought it, last month, and I need to run it through delaware emissions...I heard about the old 4 qts to the 1 gal of dry gas trick...I also heard that that they know if you run race gas, if you run too much of it ...the race gas wont register on the sniffer and they can smell it. Causing them to say, " Get the hell out of here and put some gas in it". Any other ideas..? What is a good mixture? I want to drive my hot rod!!!!!!!!!!!!! Right now she will beat almost ny stock(camparable) car on the road!!! Retarding the the tining to 0 degrees is another idea.....any help appreciated ,,,It was last tagged in New Mexico..oh yeah...how do I post a pic here???? just a little motivator...hehe

What year is the bug? Does Delaware have exemptions for cars that are XX years old?

I know my '69 is exempt here in AZ.

You might try putting on a stock carb and intake set-up, make sure it's tuned properly, and run it through like that. Then put the Dellortos back on. (Did I just suggest something that may be illegal???? )

Either way, you need to make sure the engine is tuned to exacting specs, valves adjusted, and all ignition components new or nearly new.

The biggest problem I find with old VWs are that people are using tune-up specs (timing, gap, parts, etc) from what's listed for the year of the car. These engines must be tuned and timed to the distributor. The engine, year, displacement, etc. dosen't matter. It's all about the dizzy.

What size jets are you running in your carbs? May need to look into putting smaller jets in.
