1994 GA dies when you put it in gear-HELP!

I have a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am V6. When you start it and then put it in reverse or drive- it dies. I'm told it may be a sensor-but what sensors would cause it to do this. Or maybe it is something different. I would get a diagositic done on it but I cant get it into town to check it. So we are trying to DIY with the Chilton. Please help with any possible suggestions.

there could be a few different things that are causing this.

Trans: First check your trans fluid, make sure you have enough. It could be your Torque Converter has locked up causing this... There is a plug you can take off to bypass it, but someone else may give you a better direction towards this.

Engine: The only thing that comes to mind is fuel related. you may not have enough fuel pressure to keep it going thus it stalls out. that could be faulty injectors, low pressure, fuel pump.

Hope this helps.
Good luck
