Voltage flux

I have a 95 Camero. I have replaced the alternator and battery in the last three months and the serpentine belt in the last two years. While driving the car the voltage fluctuates down to between 14 and 8 volts when I apply the gas. Everything runs normal when Idle and cruising. I also noticed it is temperature dependant, only happens when it is warm outside. Suggestions?

Re: Voltage flux

Is this happening only when the a/c is on?

how's the belt tension?

Re: Re: Voltage flux

The a/c and radio is off. The tension seems good, I don't see an indicator. I'll check that in the next few days. A correction on the voltage flux. It drops voltage to about 12 volts. I’m assuming that is the battery voltage and the alternator is completely dropping out. Thanks for replying.

Re: Voltage flux

should be 14.5 at cold start, then 13 all the time. Bad computer, bad voltage regulator, bad rectifier. Seems like a classic alternator problem. Did you put a new one in or used? Might just be a crapy part.

Wink

I have heard of and personally bought a "NEW" Alternator from Parts stores that didn't work. They're all Rebuilt using old cases. Unless you spend $300 for a new Denso or Powermaster that's what they are. It's hit or miss sometimes (Shitty quality control?). If you did get it from a store go back and have them test it. They should replace it. It's pretty common.

Re: Voltage flux

I had this happen once on a '75 Grand Am I used to own years ago. Turned out to be a defective winding on the armature in the alternator. Replaced alternator, problem solved. At the higher RPMs, the voltage would fall off because centrifugal force would cause the winding to short against the frame of the armature.

. Hey Savage with a 3,000 stall, some LT headers and 3.73's with good traction you can knock over a second off your ET with no drivability Issue's and minimal MPG loss. 4.10's are brutal and you know our 10 bolts like to go boom !

Re: Voltage flux

well it's only a 3.8... there are a few peopel I know daily driving on 4.10s who drive... in a spirited manner... and make many track passes and are fine. Getting 25 mpg avg highway/city, and with a manual (the T5 overdrive ratio is 0.72 whereas the 4l60e overdrive is a 0.70 ratio.) I'll probably invest in a TA girdle or the like for extra insurance.

I have a 3200 (i believe) stall that is being help till I have the money

and the only longtubes for my car are custom made, so for now at least I'm going with pacesetters

Re: Re: Voltage flux

You guys are awesome. Tensioner and belt looks good. I haven't been able to duplicate the problem lately, but I am going to re-replace the alternator anyways. If I still have a problem I'll let you guys know and I'll add more symptoms. Thanks.
