You Jetta Start Properly!!
I recently purchased a 2.0 litre 1994 Jetta from Japan. When cold, it cranks but does not start up until you depress the accelerator, then it shuts off when you release. It does not idle until after about 10 minutes of warming the engine. But once the engine is warm, it performs properly. I've replaced the fuel filter, timing belt, plugs & carried out general service. I've had it checked but they say nothing is wrong with the other parts (fuel pump, etc). We've failed to locate the 'self-diagnosis' gudget. How do I get the fault codes? There is also something wrong with its fuel consumption, at 7.5km/ litre town running! Please help, before I return to Toyotas.

Re: You Jetta Start Properly!!
check the mass air flow meter, the obd port is on the passenger side middle of dash under radio, but you have 94 so its obd 1 not 2 and should not have a port.

The Jetta has no obd port. In the meantime, I replaced the temperature sensor & cleaned the Idle Air Control gudget, now Jetta now starts properly. I had the MAF sensor also cleaned by blowing pressure through the gudget. But there is no improvement in fuel economy. I'm still at about 7.5km/ litre, which I believe is on the high side. Help. |

Re: Re: Re: Re: You Jetta Start Properly!!
Thanx for your constant help. Jetta consumption is about 20mpg. Could it be a dead oxygen sensor? Where is it located? Meanwhile, milleage is only 65,000km. What is this "shifter boot bezel" & where is it located? I have a rough idea, but I don't want my backyard engineering to get in the way of being sure, before I could spoil something. Thanx.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: You Jetta Start Properly!!
where the shift boot attaches to the center console. its a square trim piece that the shift boot is glued to, just pulls up to take it off.
o2 sensors do go bad all the time, but if there isnt a check light its problably not bad. i would also check coolant temperature sensor on coolant flange.
