Engine died when sitting at idiol, No spark

Hello Group, I have looked over most of these posts and used some of this advice with no luck. I was warming up my jeep the other day and it was very cold out, I walked away from it and it just died. Now the I have no spark, I have change the Crank sensor and the coil. Where do I go from here, could it be the cam sensor? My gut feeling is telling me that it is the computer, beings that It died on a super cold morning I know computers hate the cold. Any help would be great

Hello, engine needs gas, air and spark. you did not say what year jeep
you have. computer tells engine when to open and close fuel injectors.
one way to go about single out computer is to pour small amount of gas
into TB throttle body, and crank it over if it starts and it will because
of limp in mode, the computer is bad. also check battery cold will
suck the life out of battery.

Re: Re: Engine died when sitting at idiol, No spark

I have a 90 pioneer, I tested the fuel pressure at the fuel rail and I get 40lbs. The problem is I am not getting spark I can smell fuel after trying to start it so I think the computer is opening the injectors.

I havent found the Fuse for the engine yet, can you tell me where it is located?

When putting in my Crank posistion sensor I had one hell of a time. That sucker is in a lovely place now isnt it! Anyway I hope I didnt get some grease on that sensor when installing it, how the hell does that thing work anyways is it a type of hall effect sensor? a sensor that senses a magnet on the flywheel?

I don't know if your year has an electronic ignition module, but if it does it could be the problem. I had a Honda once and while I wassitting at a red light it died(at 3:00 AM!!!). I kept trying to start it, but no luck. Finally the next day I had it towed home and figured out the problem. Put in a new module and it started right up.

Re: Engine died when sitting at idiol, No spark

if i were you, i would sell that jeep how it is for as much as you can, then have your parents take out an auto loan, or yourself take out a loan if you can, and pay it off with the money you get from your jeep, then go around looking on the internet, and in magazines for a new used car. thats what i did. i just totaled my first car, 00' mitsubishi mirage, i got t-boned, no ticket, and just got a 94 integra. brand new paint job, lowered, 17 inch rims enkei, short shifter, racing clutch, short ram intake, and i just got sponsered. this new car opened a lot of eyes. you just gotta look until your satisfied, if thats what you wanna do, your jeep quit working for some reason! maybe its because you need a new car???

Why do you even reply If you dont have something good to say? I bought this thing knowing that it would need work and I intend to restore it. But I would like to get the damn thing running for the winter. I dont believe in loans,, Loans suck! I am not much for hand outs either.

Re: Engine died when sitting at idiol, No spark

check your connections at the crank sensor, make sure there's no crap in there that could cause a faulty signal. Also, on the crank sensor, there's a paper spacer that goes on there to provide an air gap between the tone ring on the flywheel and the sensor itself. If that paper spacer is missing, you'll have driveability issues, experienced this w/ my dad's '88 MJ 4.0 after I replaced his clutch and slave this past weekend.

Re: Re: Engine died when sitting at idiol, No spark

Thanks for the reply I didnt know about he paper spacer. Regards if I intstalled the crank sensor correctly or not it should start? I need to do some more testing to see if it is the ignition modual. I took the valve cover off of this thing 2 weeks ago and not good. Someone was running some real crappy oil in this thing. I am planning on changing this motor in the spring , she does have 212,000 miles on her. So far parts seem reasonable and I dont mind putting money into a JEEP, they hold value.

Re: Engine died when sitting at idiol, No spark

well, the thing w/ the crank sensor, it can only be mounted one way & one way only. Even putting the connectors back together, there really isn't a way to mess things up. What you want to look out for is the angle of the sensor. If it's not squared, meaning not completly making contact and not bolted down, you will run into situations where the truck will start up but it'll sputter acting like the fuel pump is bad. Also, make sure you route the wire around the exhaust manifold, that'll cook that sensor in no time and cause havoc.

From what you are saying it sounds ike i have the same exact problem as you did. with one exception, mine was just parked for about a month. Would the ingnition control module just got bad while parked?
