Engine noise sound like gearbox/tranny whine

Can anyone help - the agent cannot?! My 2000 STS with only 12k miles on it has developed an engine noise which sounds like a failing gearbox/rear axle whine. it is not either of those or A/C pump as the noise occurs in idle when the car is stationary. Could it be timing belt - not sure if this model has a timing chain or a belt. Has anyone else experienced this problem and is the car safe to drive as is?

Re: Engine noise sound like gearbox/tranny whine

this car has a timing chain. Check to see if it is alternator. You can remove the serpentine belt and run to see if noise goes away. could also be p/s pump.
