I have given up on my 95 jeep 2.5

I have a 95 Jeep YJ 2.5 4cyl with an idle problem. When the engine is cold it is very difficult to start, maybe 15 minutes of cranking before it begins to catch and then it stills takes several minutes to stay running. If the temp outside is warmer the engine fires first click. When running at any speed there is a small miss in her idle and she loses spark for a split second (wont shut off but feels like it) I have replaced or tried the following.

Spark Plugs
Wires
Distributor
Rotor Button
Temp Sensor
Idle Motor and sensor
Crank Sensor

Three shops have tried looking for vacuum leaks, intake leaks and other common issues with no success. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks

Re: I have given up on my 95 jeep 2.5

I have the same year with the same engine. I just got finished dropping a new engine in mine and I had the exact same problem getting it to start the first time with the new engine. It turned out to be the timing and it took us a couple days to get it right. A Jeep mechanic friend of mine told me to set the timing by pulling out number one spark plug and sticking a screwdriver in there to see when the piston is at top dead center while slowly turning the crankshaft with a ratchet. You then position your distributor so that the rotor is pointing at sparkplug wire number one. If it's still not quite right you can fine tune it by turning the distributor, but this involves first grinding off two prongs on the distributor so it can be turned. My mechanic friend said that this is routinely done in jeep dealership shops because the prongs on the 95 wrangler distributor make it impossible to turn slightly for fine tuning. If you have a Haynes manual check out Chapter 2A Section 3 for more specific instructions on getting your timing set up.

I know this all sounds like alot, and believe me it was all trial and error, so you may want to just take it to a good jeep shop and tell them to get your timing perfect and I bet it will run great.

Re: I have given up on my 95 jeep 2.5

Thanks man for the tips. Sorry it took so long to reply. The problem ending up being the computer. We have a lot of salt water in the air where I live and the computer was corroded. Once I replaced the computer the missfire while driving and the slow starts in the cold went away.

Thanks again.

Re: I have given up on my 95 jeep 2.5

You know come to think of it, I might check into a new computer myself because I still have occasional misfires from time to time and I know the timing is right on as well as all the other things you had mentioned before. Did you get your new one online? I'm curious what a good price would be for one.
