89 Mk2 1.8 idling probs

Hi Folks.
New to the board,looking good
my dad has a 1989(F)mk2 1.8 gl CARB, it has only covered 65k and is having problems with the idle, The car starts every time without fail, but wait a couple of mins and the car sounds as though its running on 3 plugs, rev it a bit and it goes only to come back again, and again.
When its in the garage just after starting theres a lot of black smoke and a strong smell of fuel,
When he comes to a junction, roundabout the car almost comes to a halt, its only his quick reactions by dipping the clutch and changing down that prevent it from stalling.
He has taken it to a vw mechanic but he can't shed any light on it.

Can anyone please shed any light on this one.
Cheers

Nice one, thank you for the reply, would a crypton tune center be the best bet to take it to have it sorted or my nearest V Dub dealer ?
Cheers

you can adjust the fuel distributor with a 3mm allen wrench. I believe clockwise to richen counterclockwise to lean..
