95 camaro gas fume smell
I have a 95 camaro 3.4, I'm getting a strong gas fume smell coming from the driver side rear (near the gas cap). It's not raw gas, only fumes. It only happens when the car is stopped after a trip longer than 15-20 minutes. I replaced the gas cap, with no success. I also removed the charcoal canister (which is directly behind the gas cap) thinking that may also be the problem. The canister looked fine, but when I shook the canister, small bits of charcoal spilled out from the tank tube. I replaced the canister, but it didn't help.
The car runs perfect. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if you smell gas fumes that means you have a gas leak somewhere... check under the car from the tank up...

I'm positive it's not leaking gas. I laid down a special white sheet covering almost the whole vehicle. It turns red even if a drop of gas makes contact with it, but after 12 hours it was all white indicating no gas leaks. The smell isn't raw gas. It's more like exhaust fumes. If I close the garage after I stopped the car, it will literally stink up the entire garage and will take a couple hours for the air to clear.

How bout the exhaust does it smell like gas when it's running? I am trying to brainstorm what this could be and I am coming up empty...

I would suggest checking the vacuum line/lines on the top of the tank, to ensure they're connected.

No, the exhaust doesn't smell like gas. I did find a small part that connects out from the charcoal canister. I looked it up and it's called "evaporative emission pressure control valve". It's about a foot away from the charcoal canister. I guess it's a valve that opens up and releases fumes (not sure if it's gas fumes or exhuast fumes). Never heard of this part and I have no idea how to test it. There are no wires, so I'm assuming the part is mechanical, not electronic. I hate to be swapping out parts without conducting some type of test on it. Like I previously noted, the smell is the strongest by the driver side rear tire. That's where the canister and this small part is located. Any help would be appreciated.

The EVAP control valve controls when the gas fumes are released into the engine. This system is how you actually save the fuel fumes and burn them in the engine. I believe it is controlled by vacuum. Are you positive all vacuum lines are connected? Do you have a Check Engine Light on?

Found the problem. The canister has 3 tubes. One is for fresh air, one goes to the control valve and the other goes to the purge selonoid valve that's mounted on the egine, next to the plenum. I removed the line that's connected to the purge selonoid valve. It was completely clogged up with charcoal bits. In my first post I had indicated I replaced the canister because charcoal bits were coming out. Well, I guess the bad canister was pushing charcoal bits through the line and little by little it clogged up the selonoid valve. I connected a compressor at 100psi and it blew out all the charcoal bits from the line. At least 1/3 cup of bits came out. There was even some bits inside the valve, so I don't know if it possibly damaged the purge selonoid valve or not. I'm assuming this valve open and closes to let the fumes in to be reburned by the engine. The selonoid has two terminals on top, so I connected 12volts to it, but didn't hear anything open or close. I pushed about 5psi through the valve and it goes through with ease, even with 12volts applied. The bottom line, it was a bad charcoal canister causing the smell. I hope this post will help someone else. I appreciate everyones help. One final question, anyone know anything about the purge selonoid valve and how to test it? I'm just worried the charcoal bits damaged it.

Your evap system lines are only rated at 1 psi max...

i also have an occasional gas fume smell coming from my bird, its a 97. This usually happens while its running. its not gas cap, so i donno.

MANY THANKS to PConsulting , I have a 1994 Camaro V6 with the same problem..the fuel pump was replaced 12/05 and when I have more then a 1/4 tank I get fumes in the garage overnight, I had to push the car outside to start it ...I was about to drop the tank and have the work inspected but this points me in a totaly new direction ...If I dont blow myself up, Ill let you know if it solved my problem..LOL
