Power loss and stalled on interstate

3 hours into my drive back home from Thanksgiving, my '98 Passat (manual) died on me while crusing at 70+ mph on the interstate. I managed to get it to the side of the street and called a tow truck. We tried to jump it, but it would not turn over. The battery is only 3 months old. Any clues as to what might be the problem?

I just got word today. It was my timing betl. My engine is fried. I should have changed my belt this summer when my mechanic told me it was time to do it. Now I'm facing repairs between $4k and $5. It may be time to say goodbye to VW and buy a new car.
