Help needed! Odometer erratic, CEL & OD blinking on Windstar '96, 3.8L

Need help!

1) Odometer erratic

2) Check engine light on

3) O/d light blinking

4) jerking noted when gears shift and whining noise too

Changed VSS but same problems persist. Had it checked by an Auto Electric guy, No Luck! Any ideas what it could be? DTC P500
