what is best for jeeps?

just a general question. do any of these oil products work? whether for the engine, tranny, the diffs, or anywhere else you can drain fluid?

how about the grade of gas? is higher octane really better for "any" car or should jeep owners stick to regular?

also, stuff like distributers, spark plugs & wires. better to go mopar or will after-market do?

air intake. should/possible to make it more efficient...any benefits...leave it as it is?

Re: what is best for jeeps?

speaking only from personal experience:

I ues standard fluids, with the exception of oil- valvoline maxlife since 80K - no probs, no leaks

I use nothing but regular unleaded gas - no probs there

never had trouble with any quality after-market parts, but it is important to note things: like the replacment aluminum water pumps may require a different coolant.

air intake - haven't really looked at it, just keep the filter clean...

Re: what is best for jeeps?

synthetics for tc and diffs work best. My 5.2 runs best on medium grade gas but I use reg most of the time-cost factor!! Most after market parts work as well as dealer unless you want high performance.

Re: what is best for jeeps?

don't know about the diffs, but the tc takes about 2.5 - 3 qts.

Re: what is best for jeeps?

The capacity chart that I have for the 1994 JGC lists the capacities like this

4.0L oil 6 qts with filter.

Use a good 10w30 in the summer or else 5w30 or or 0w30 year around. Synthetic is optional in the engine depending on your preference, availablility and price you want to spend.

transmission - 4 qts for a pan drop and filter change. Use only the MOPAR ATF+4 fluid in the transmission!!! This is an upgrade from the ATF+3 that was spec'd at the time of manufacture.

The transfer case uses 3.4 pints if it is a 249 (quadra trac) or 3 pints if the 242 model.

I would use a mobil1 ATF or the Amsoil ATF in the TC. Both are a full synthetic.

The front diff capacity lists at 3.2 pints and the rear (dana 35)at 3.4 pints.

Here again, I would use a synthetic gear oil like Mobil1 in a 75w90 grade. If the rear diff is a posi, make sure you add 4 oz or the limited slip additive even though the diff oil bottle label sounds like you don't have to.....

So far as other additive products go, stay away from them!!! Especially in the transmission, transfer case and diffs. You are setting yourself up for trouble in the future!!! If the additive is a last resort before a big repair bill or vehicle trade that's a different story........

The engines used in '94 only called for regular grade gas. 87 octane should be fine. If you have a pinging problem like some 5.2 engines have, try an 89 octane if it is available. Heck,,, some people even mix 92 and 87 octanes 50/50 - what ever turns your crank

Have fun working on your Jeep - thats what it's all about.
