Door hinge pin replacement

My driver side door has more lift to it than Gravedigger. It is now apparent to me that my hinge replacement procrastinion is going to land me in a bad spot. So how do I replace that whole roller and pin assy. Do I have to take the door off?

Not sure exactly what has to be done to replace t, but I'm sure the door ahs to come off. If you don't the sheqar weight of the door will make other things bend when you start removing pieces. Also it will definitely be easier to work on off of the car. Good luck

Re: Door hinge pin replacement

Yes the door has to come off. Once you punch out the pins the hinge will be two separate pieces so you must support the door first. Shops have a jig contraption made especially for this, but you can rig something up and use a helper. Tape all the door edges and sills with something heavy like duct tape to prevent messing up the paint. Besides the pins you also need to replace the bushings in the hinge. All the parts come together in a kit from one of the restoration parts companies. You can unbolt the hinge from the door/body and rebuild it on a bench, but then you will have to realign the door upon installation. If your hinges are welded to the body and door (some are) then this is not an option.

You may be able to just replace the pins and bushings to fix the problem. You should be able to get oversized bushings if the holes got too enlarged. Usually you don't have to worry about the hinge, just the pins and bushings get worn.
