clunking noise
I have a 94 intrepid 3.3l and when I hit the brakes (mostly at speeds under 40mph) or when I hit a pothole I hear one loud clunk coming from the passengers front wheel. I've used a prybar to check the bushings and anything else that will move both with the wheel on and off the ground and can only find any play on the inner cv joint where it goes into the transmission. The boots are in good shape but I can move(wiggle about a 1/4 inch) the inner cv part that goes into the transmission. Is it supposed to move like this and would that cause the clunking noise? if so what else can I check for the clunking noise, it's kinda loud. Other than that the car runs great. Thanks for any help.

Re: clunking noise
you could have bad motor mounts, a strut damper/bushing getting weak.

Re: clunking noise
I'm thinking you have the smell problem I had. bad spring rubber. JCwhitney sales a rubber you can put in it, but I haven't got it in as of today...

Re: clunking noise
I had a clunk on the right side when braking, it was especially noticable after making a left turn then applying the brakes. It turned out to be the control arm to frame bushing had gone bad. I replaced the control arm assembly as it came with the frame and strut rod bushings plus a new ball joint (the ball joints are integral and not replacable without buying the whole arm) was a good thing I did as the ball joints were bad too. I did both left and right arms just because of the cars age and they cost me around 150 total for the parts. Might want an alignment too after replacing them.
