check eng lite, loss of power, black smoke!

After 144,000 miles ( I put them all on) I still love my 1994 Trooper! But, several times lately the Check Engine Light has come on, there has been an almost 80% loss of power and black smoke pours out of the exhaust! The other day the only way I made it home was in 3rd gear (manual tranny) reved to hi rpm's(5000+)...anything less and the engine just wanted to quit entirely. This is extremely frustrating as there is no one here in this state (Vermont) that knows ANYTHING about Troopers...can anyone give me some direction to follow to try and pinpoint the problem and fix it? Someone said Oxygen Sensor....could it be this simple? I'm going crazy here, and the snow is flying...I need my Trooper to function 100% to get through this oncoming winter.Other than this, all is well. New timing belt and spark plugs recently, new brake rotors and pads...no oil leaks. I want to go another 144,000! Any help will be so much appreciated... Thanks from the Green Mountains of Vermont!

Gotta know what the code is. Black smoke indicates an overly rich condition. Could be MAF sensor related, or almost sounds as if she jumped valve timing (timing belt).

G/luck
